The Perilous Rise of Platform Heels: A 90s Nostalgia Trip or a Fashion Faux Pas?

They’re back. Those towering platforms, the ones that make you feel like you’re walking on stilts disguised as shoes. One minute you’re scrolling through Instagram, bombarded by influencers in impossibly high platforms, and the next, you’re staring at your own reflection, trying to rock a pair with your vintage Levi’s.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a certain undeniable allure to platforms. A potent cocktail of nostalgia and power. They instantly transport you back to the era of grunge and girl power, of Spice Girls and baby tees. A time when fashion wasn’t afraid to be loud, brash, even a little bit ridiculous.

And let's be honest, the height! That extra lift can do wonders for your confidence, making your legs look miles long. There’s a reason why they were the footwear of choice for pop icons and fashion rebels alike.

But there’s a fine line between a nostalgic nod and a full-blown fashion emergency. And let’s face it, platforms can be treacherous territory.

I remember my own foray into the world of platforms back in the 90s. A pair of chunky black platforms, sky-high, with a thick strap across the ankle. I thought I was the epitome of cool, strutting down the halls of my high school. Until, that is, I tripped on a staircase and landed in a heap at the bottom.

The physical pain was one thing (and believe me, it was real), but the blow to my ego? Devastating.

The thing about platforms is, they require a certain level of confidence and finesse to pull off. And even then, there’s always the risk of looking like you’re playing dress-up in your older sister’s closet.

So, where does that leave us? Are platforms simply a fashion faux pas waiting to happen?

Not necessarily. Like any trend, it’s all about context and execution. A sleek platform sandal can elevate a simple slip dress, while a chunky platform boot can add a touch of grunge to a feminine frock.

The key is to choose your platforms wisely. Opt for styles that feel modern and fresh, rather than dated and costume-y. And most importantly, make sure you can actually walk in them.

Because nothing screams fashion victim louder than someone stumbling around in shoes they can barely stand in.

So, go ahead and embrace the nostalgia. Just remember, when it comes to platforms, proceed with caution. Your ankles will thank you.
